WHY SHOULD YOU TEST FOR LEGIONELLA?The main pathogenic species for humans is Legionella pneumophila. These bacteria have the ability to penetrate and multiply in cells. They inhabit water supply systems of both hot and cold water, as well as bathing devices and air conditioners. Therefore, places of increased risk are all kinds of showers, showers, hot tubs, jacuzzis and cooling towers. They inhabit, in particular, water devices containing sediment and rust. Infection takes place via the respiratory tract. It occurs as a result of aerosol inhalation or choking on contaminated water. Particularly dangerous are situations conducive to the formation of fine-particle water dust, e.g. from fountains, showers or air conditioning. Legionella bacteria may cause e.g. Legionellosis, also known as Legionnaires' disease or Pontiac fever, especially in people with weakened immune systems, the elderly and children. Diseases caused by Legionella bacteria are dangerous and are included in the list of mandatory registered infectious diseases. Water testing for Legionella takes about 10 days. The determination is made by membrane filtration. |
