Water Intended for Human Consumption – what tests does the Mikrolab laboratory perform?

Water is one of the most important natural resources, and its quality has a direct impact on our health. Water intended for human consumption must meet certain standards to be safe for drinking and everyday use. In laboratories such as Mikrolab, detailed analyses are carried out to ensure that every drop of water we consume is free from contaminants and microorganisms that may pose a health risk.

What tests are performed on water?

Microbiology laboratories like ours conduct a range of tests to assess water quality. These include:

  • Microbiological tests – these are particularly important to exclude the presence of bacteria that can cause food poisoning and other diseases. The most common microorganisms include Escherichia coli and fecal enterococci.
  • Physicochemical tests – analysis of the content of chemical substances, such as heavy metals (e.g. lead, mercury), which may be found in water as a result of industrial pollution. Checking parameters such as the smell, taste or appearance of water. Although these features are not always directly related to water safety, they can indicate its quality and purity.
  • Legionella bacteria tests – these are particularly important in water installations in public buildings, hotels or hospitals. Legionella bacteria, especially Legionella pneumophila, can develop in warm water and pose a threat to human health, causing a serious respiratory disease – legionellosis, also known as Legionnaires' disease.

Why is it worth taking care of water quality?

Drinking good quality water is not only a matter of taste, but above all, health. Contaminated water can lead to many health problems, from simple stomach problems to serious infectious diseases. Interestingly, it is not only tap water that can be contaminated. Even bottled water, if it has not been properly tested, can contain contaminants that can adversely affect health.

Water Trivia:

  • Water and Skin Health – Drinking the right amount of water not only hydrates your body, but also has a positive effect on your skin’s appearance. A well-hydrated body is better at eliminating toxins, which can reduce the risk of acne and other skin problems.
  • Water and Concentration – Studies show that even mild dehydration can affect our ability to concentrate and our performance. Drinking water regularly helps keep our minds alert, which improves the efficiency of our work and studies.
  • Water and Body Temperature – Water helps maintain the body’s thermal balance. On hot days, drinking it regularly helps the body regulate its temperature effectively, preventing overheating.

What are the standards for drinking water?

All over the world, drinking water must meet certain quality standards, which are set by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and national regulations. In Poland, these standards are regulated by the Regulation of the Minister of Health and include parameters such as microbiological and physicochemical contamination, as well as other quality indicators.

Summary

Each of us consumes water every day, which is why it is so important for us to be sure of its quality. Laboratories such as Mikrolab carry out the necessary tests to ensure that the water we drink is clean and safe. Remember that taking care of water quality is taking care of our health!
